The Harcourts Foundation, the charitable arm of Harcourts Group Australia, announced grants to 13 Australian charities during of its most recent quarterly funding round. A total of $50,847 was donated across Australia to benefit charities serving the communities where Harcourts employees live and work. Since the Harcourts Foundation’s first donation in 2008, over 1000 grants have been made worldwide, with donations totalling over $4,800,000 NZD.
“Giving back to the communities where we live is such an important part of what we believe in at Harcourts,” said Julia Eyles, The Harcourts Foundation Coordinator. “With this round of funding, over $50,000 is going directly to the charities doing amazing work across Australia, and it will impact specific initiatives. We’re very proud of the fact that we can give 100% of funds raised through the Foundation with zero administrative fees.”
Harcourts franchise owners in each state nominate and support the organisations that impact the community. Additionally, Harcourts corporate team members are given the chance to nominate a specific charity for a grant as part of an initiative called ‘corporate choice grants’, while the Landmark Harcourts network also designates grant recipients.
Charities selected by The Harcourts Foundation (region) and grant amount:
Create Foundation (National – Corporate Choice) – $1,000
The national consumer body for children and young people with an out-of-home care experience, for children and young people who are unable to live with their birth families and are placed in short or long-term care to ensure the child’s safety. Funding will be used to support the CREATE Your Future Grant Scheme which has been designed specifically to help young people with a care experience (15-25 years) transition to independence through practical grants.
Deakin University – National Centre for Farmer Health (Landmark Harcourts) – $4,000
A partnership between Western District Health Service and Deakin University, based in Hamilton, Victoria, the Centre provides national leadership to improve the health, well-being and safety of farm men and women, farm workers, their families and communities by increasing knowledge transfer across the target groups of farmers, rural professionals, academics and students. The grant will be used to promote their cause at the Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival, including entering a “Run 4 Farmer Health” team.
Edmund Rice Camps NSW (National – Corporate Choice) – $1,000
Providing week-long, recreational holiday experiences for disadvantaged children to connect, learn social skills, and develop positive relationships with the children and volunteers on camp, all in a safe and supportive environment, the Camp brings together a group of 25-30 children aged 5-10 years who are experiencing disadvantage, with a group of 25-30 young adult volunteers who are recruited and trained to support and encourage them.
Gold Coast Hospital Foundation (Queensland) – $4,500
As the official charity for the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, the purpose of the Hospital Foundation is to support sick and injured patients suffering distress and hardship in Gold Coast public hospitals and community health services, across more than 40 health facilities including Robina and Gold Coast University Hospital. This grant will assist to purchase 6 iPads uploaded with a purpose-built app for ICU patients, known as TICTACS, to assist their most critically ill and injured patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
Little Wings Ltd (New South Wales) – $8,880
Providing a free, safe and professional flight and ground transportation service for seriously ill children and their families from regional NSW, to reduce the emotional stress, financial burden and travel fatigue associated with long distance and repetitive travel required to seek specialised medical treatment only available at the Children’s Hospitals in major city centres. This grant will provide funding for six flights to help a seriously ill child attend the Children’s Hospital in Sydney for medical treatment, which will enable that child to return home three times during treatment to experience the comforts and love of their home environment.
Operation Flinders Foundation Inc. (South Australia) – $4,950
Transforms young people, who have been identified as being at-risk, through their participation in a world-leading evidence-based remote outback intervention programs. The project operates in the far northern Flinders Ranges, with the exercises accommodating up to 100 participants who operate in independent teams, trekking more than 100kms over eight days. This grant will fully fund three participants in the next trek on 3-10 August 2017.
QLD Police Citizens Youth Welfare Association (Crestmead PCYC) (Queensland) – $5,000
The QPCYWA works toward the development of youth and family health and wellbeing through the provision of sport, recreation and welfare programs, and their affiliation with the Queensland Police Service. This grant supports the Braking the Cycle program, a Learner Driver Mentor Program (LDMP) which provides local disadvantaged youth the opportunity to obtain their licence with the support of a volunteer mentor.
Rebound WA t/as Wheelchair Sports WA Association (Western Australia) – $4,500
Helping people with a physical disability to rebound from adversity by offering a range of programs for people with a physical disability of all ages in Western Australia, the Whiz Kids program is aimed at children with a disability aged 5-12. Members of Harcourts Western Australia participated in an abseil from Perth’s QV1 building to raise over $4,500, matched by this grant to a total of over $9000.
Starting Over Support (National – Corporate Choice) – $1,000
SOS is a charity dedicated to providing a safer and fulfilling new life to families and individuals escaping domestic violence and other crisis situations. It provides essential household goods and furniture to start a new home and is the only free comprehensive service of its kind in Perth.
St Vincent de Paul Society SA – Fred’s Van (South Australia) – $2,000
Fred’s Van is a good work of St Vincent de Paul which feeds the homeless and marginalised at eight sites across metro Adelaide, and two regional sites at Port Lincoln and Port Pirie. Grant funds will be used to purchase a commercial dishwasher for the Salisbury Fred’s Van, in the transition from kerbside to an inside venue for the Winter of 2017.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Association of SA (SIDS and Kids SA) (South Australia) – $1,000
Providing support for SA families who experience the sudden and unexpected death of a child during pregnancy, infancy and early childhood for 40 years, it is the only bereavement support organisation providing free professional ongoing counselling and support. This grant will be used towards a PC connectable Conference Camera to provide Safe Sleeping Education live webinar sessions to country-based Childcare Centres, nannies, home-based carers and country hospitals.
The Mater Foundation / Smiling for Smiddy (Queensland and South Australia) – $8,017
The support will be tied to funding cancer research through their Smiling for Smiddy program, a national program of cycling and triathlon challenge events funding cancer research at Mater, established in honour of keen triathlete Adam Smiddy who passed away from an aggressive melanoma in 2006, aged just 26 years old. Harcourts corporate staff took place in a cycle across New Zealand to raise funds for this worthy cause.
Variety the Children’s Charity Tasmania – (Tasmania) – $5,000
A chapter of the national body, Variety Australia, it enhances Tasmanian children and youth who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs through the provision of tangible equipment and services. The grant will be used towards purchasing an upgraded Variety Sunshine Coach to deliver their Hobart-based events and programs.
To date, all funds have been raised by dedicated Harcourts team members and clients through fundraising events, auctions, workplace giving, individual donations or ‘off the top’ donations, where sales agents give back an amount from the sale of each property. No management fees, salaries or running costs are taken from a donation account. The Foundation’s national Board of Directors, Coordinator, Accountant and Regional Ambassadors all donate their time and expertise, meaning 100% of all funds raised go directly to the charities where they are needed most.
Within the four countries in which the Harcourts Foundation operates, over 50% of the offices donate with each property sold, and Harcourts employees everywhere are rising to the challenge of raising more funds for their local communities through innovative and creative ways.
